The
Tsarskoselsky Carnival: the
main prize is a car!
A carnival was held on June, 28 in Tsarskoye Selo. It was devoted to the 298th anniversary of the city foundation. It called on all towners to put on carnival costumes, to send flying balloons, to walk in a festive column, to take part in different contests and to get prizes. Traditionally, the festive event began with a ceremony of cutting off a principal officials’ attribute – a tie. Honorary foreign guests from France, Germany, Ireland, America and Belarus have also been forced to leave their ties in the hands of festive jokers.
Citizens and guests of the carnival were welcoming festive columns. Pink balloons and decorated cars made people delighting. Entertainment zones, such as a clowns’ village, an art street, a sport city, a knights’ camp and a dog carnival spot took place simultaneously in several places.
Contests of children’s and adults’ costumes have also become traditional for the carnival. The main prize - a pink car - was won by a twenty-year-old resident of Tsarskoye Selo. The jury has defined her costume – "Tsar - Bird" as the best.

A photo exhibition
We are glad to invite citizens and guests of Pushkin and Pavlovsk for
the photoexhibition by Kim Taminiau "Parallels and Contrasts; St. Petersburg and
Groningen: Two Northern Cities in Focus".
Already in the 18th century during the times of Peter the Great, many
Dutchmen from the Nothern provinces of the Dutch Republic were traveling to St Petersburg,
which at the time seemed to be an ideal place to visit. Although very different from
everybody life back then in the Dutch Republic, many Dutch citizens chose to remain in St.
Petersburg. The many Russian names of Dutch origin we can still find in the city, remind
us of this period. Mirroring this historic event, today there are many Russians living in
Groningen, in the north of Netherlands, integrated in Dutch society through either work or
studies and many with the intention to stay. Thus, perhaps life in the northern Russia and
the northern part of Netherlands is not so different after all.
Having visited St. Petersburg many times, the Dutch photographer Kim
Taniniau set out to explore similarities and deference’s between life in St. Petersburg
and Groningen through the lens of a camera. Co-founder of Chronoscoop Film &
Photography, Mrs. Taminiau now presents the results of comparative photography at the
photo exhibition in St. Petersburg.
The exhibition will be open from 16 of June to 23 of June in the former Dutch Church, Nevsky pr. 20.
